Over the last 20 years, many North American workers have been diagnosed with asbestosis, silicosis, and mesothelioma-causing new regulations to be placed on employers to monitor and control exposure to potential sources of hazardous materials. Because these occupational illnesses go unnoticed for many years, many die and are often undiagnosed.
Pulmonary function testing or spirometry can detect early signs of these diseases prompting early treatment and increase survival rates. If your company is housed in a building prior to 1970, or if work processes include sandblasting or work with concrete, sand, dust, or other airborne particles, your employees may be at risk in developing these or other conditions and a respiratory program in your workplace is warranted.
